Mobile Phone Filming tips and advice

Got a mobile phone? Love film? Follow these tips and you can start making great movies!
If you make a short film of any sort on your phone, send it in to us [mobilefilms@concepttshirts.co.uk] and we will make it available here to other mobile film fans.

So you have your mobile phone which lets you take video and you want to make movies? Join the fun!

Point and shoot...

With a mobile phone video camera you have to deal in close ups. Long views of the scenery are not going to work well owing to the small screen and the lens quality. Fill the screen with your subject in a way you haven't really seen on TV and movies before - we are dealing with a new aesthetic that has yet to be fully worked through.

Panning..

Owing to the amount of frames per second of mobile video any panning shots will either be blurred and blocky, or need to be slow. You may like the blocky aesthetic, but bear in mind that you will probably not be able to make out a lot of the scene.

Sound...

Sound is a difficult issue when shooting mobile phone video. You will be picking up everything around you, so if you want to record speech make sure that there is little wind noise and that the speaker is near the camera. Purists will only allow you to use the microphone on the mobile phone, but it is also possible to record sound separately on a suitable recorder and add it to the pictures in the edit.

Record more than you expect to need

Always start and end your shots before (and after) you think you need to. This will give you time in the edit to put your shots together.

Memory...

Make sure that you have enough memory in your camera. Buy a big memory expansion card or you will have to keep downloading your shots before you can shoot more.

Editing your video together

You only need the simplest equipment to turn your raw footage into a movie! But first you will need to put your footage on your PC and edit it.

Use your normal method (bluetooth, cable, infrared - or just put the card in your reader) and transfer the footage to your PC. You probably already have Windows movie maker on your PC, so load that up and see if it recognises your footage. if so...get editing! But you will probably need to convert your footage to a format that your editing program recognises. To do this we use Stoik video converter, which is free!

Convert your footage to WMV or AVI, then load it into your editing program and start making your movie!

The Future

You are part of the future of film making, so enjoy yourself and start making history!

Send us your movie (mobilefilms@concepttshirts.co.uk) so that lots of other people can see it!

Finally...Experiment!

Whatever we say here, be prepared to ignore it completely!

Good luck! Mobile phone Filming tips and advice!
