The work of Banksy is beginning to
be recognised as some of the best Uk contemporary art produced
in the last few years. When Damian Hirst et al were banging away
at their psuedo-conceptual work, Banksy was infiltrating the street,
using that ultimate weapon - context - ignored by other more famous
artists.
Put a painting in the Royal Academy
and it's not going to change the world. The Telegraph might get
upset, and the Daily Mail might whip up a bit of a storm, but
people who don't stroke their chins and say 'nice impasto' aren't
going to see it.
Banksy uses the street as his gallery,
shooting out at night with a rucksack full of spray paint and
some home-made stencils. The next day the urban environment has
been transformed into a gallery, with a sense of humour that is
usually spot on. If Banksy didn't have a sense of humour then
there might have been problems, but he most certainly does and
so he takes the plaudits from the art world after a long period
of apprenticeship when noone cared who he was or what he did.
